Nonsurgical patient readmission rates are higher, report says

Discharge data showed 22.7% of patients who were hospitalized for nonsurgical care of chronic illness and 18% treated for acute conditions were readmitted within 30 days, according to the Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality's Healthcare Cost and Utilization Project. The report found readmission rates for surgery patients were lower. The authors said creating "multi-state benchmarks" could identify areas that need improvement.
