Calif. lawmaker introduces bill to expand role of NPs

California state Sen. Ed Hernandez, a Democrat from West Covina, introduced a set of bills to expand the scopes of practice of nurse practitioners, optometrists and pharmacists in an effort to alleviate a looming physician shortage. Under the legislation, nurse practitioners would be allowed to treat Medicaid and Medicare patients even if they work with doctors who do not take such patients.
