Debate continues over expanding hygienists' scope of practice

Some states are considering following Minnesota and Alaska's lead in expanding the scope of practice for specially trained dental hygienists in an effort to provide dental care to more people. Proponents say dental therapists, or mid-level providers, expand access to needed care. The American Dental Association says there is no overall shortage of dentists, and all patients deserve to receive care from a dentist.
