Mars soil sample proves the planet could have sustained life

Seven months into its planned two-year jaunt across the surface of Mars, NASA's Curiosity rover has uncovered proof that the Red Planet could have supported microbial life at some point in its past. Soil taken from 2.5 inches below the planet's surface had traces of such life-supporting substances as carbon, nitrogen and oxygen, as well as evidence of an ancient body of water. "We have found a habitable environment that is so benign and supportive of life that probably, if this water was around and you had been on the planet, you would have been able to drink it," said John Grotzinger, Curiosity chief scientist.
