Rates of double mastectomy continue rising

The percentage of American women with early-stage breast cancer who choose double mastectomy continues to rise, but many do not have a medical reason for doing so, a University of Michigan Comprehensive Cancer Center study found. Double mastectomy is a viable prevention strategy, however, for women at high risk for recurrence, experts say. Advances in plastic surgery, including reconstruction using autologous fat and tissue, make the procedure more palatable, says Dr. Malcolm Roth, past president of the American Society of Plastic Surgeons.
