Florida considers renewed focus on civics education

Florida lawmakers are considering proposals to improve the "civic health" of students by increasing the focus on subjects such as government, geography, history and civic responsibility. The bipartisan bills would require seventh-graders to take civics, create a high-stakes civics exam for middle-school students and would mandate that related content be integrated into the language-arts curriculum across all grades. The effort is receiving widespread support, but some critics are concerned about how much it will cost.
