New iPad display gives developers a headache

The new iPad's extra-sharp screen poses a quandary for Web developers, writes Scott Gilbertson: How best to serve up optimized hi-resolution images without dragging down load times or swamping less-advanced mobile devices. Apple's solution for its own site is JavaScript code that serves low-res images by default, but calls for higher-resolution images when a device can handle them. That solution would work, but at the cost of significantly slowing down websites, Gilbertson notes.
