Multiple layers of protection in what Boeing describes as a comprehensive solution to the 787's battery problem are undergoing tests that the company says should be complete in weeks. One key is an enclosure system designed to prevent, rather than just contain, a fire. "We made changes to avoid propagation from one cell to another, better heat-resistant sealing and added high temperature dielectric isolators above and below the battery cell. We also added dielectric protection in the spaces between them," said 787 Chief Project Engineer Mike Sinnett.
