A quarter of math faculty jobs go unfilled

A quarter of all math faculty openings at colleges and universities during the 2011-12 school year went unfilled, a new study shows. The study, to be published in April in the American Mathematical Society publication "Notices," reveals that that number has been cut in half since 2006, but most who earn their math doctorates either return to the institution that granted them leave, or, in the case of international students, they return home. "We just need to be able to recruit. The job opportunities are there," said study co-author Robert Reys.
