Texas lawmakers currently are debating whether requiring all students to take Algebra II is the best way to improve college and career readiness. Some lawmakers are advocating for an opt-out option for students for whom vocational classes and training is more appropriate. One lawmaker noted that educators have indicated that some students drop out of school as a result of the Algebra II requirement. Others say reducing existing requirements could result in a watered-down curriculum.
