Belk's next generation looks to the future

The recession proved a wake-up call for brothers Tim and John Belk, the CEO and COO, respectively, of the namesake regional department store that turns 125 this year. The retailer cut dividends, benefits and spending on new stores during the downturn, without big layoffs, and now plans to invest more than $600 million in the next five years to remodel and expand stores and invest significantly in building its omnichannel capabilities.
