Florida state lawmakers should not bow to pressure from groups that claim a state law allowing pay-as-you-go financing of nuclear plants should be repealed, writes Jerry Paul, a nuclear engineer and former member of the state Legislature. The law saves taxpayers money while encouraging the development of carbon-emission-free nuclear energy. "In Florida, 90 percent of all costs allowed under this law for one utility were used to expand two existing nuclear plants. ... The cost was less than the amount saved from the fossil fuel that otherwise would have to be purchased," Paul writes.
