Focus on end-of-life care, not ICUs, physician urges

Dr. Joan Teno challenges the persistent pattern of aggressively treating frail, dying patients in ICU settings rather than using a family-based model focused on end-of-life planning to ease suffering. Greater support is needed for the goal of fostering careful patient and family discussions that weigh life span versus quality of life, according to Teno, a professor of health policy and practice at Brown University.
