Some nuclear plants must upgrade ventilation systems, NRC says

The Nuclear Regulatory Commission has ordered utilities operating nuclear plants with boiling water reactors to upgrade ventilation systems, stopping short of mandating the installation of filtered vents. The directive will enhance safety and help prevent the escape of radiation after fuel damage, the NRC said. "With this direction to the NRC staff, the commission is addressing the central issue: What is the most effective way to filter containment vents to reduce radiation releases in extreme situations where a reactor may be damaged?" said Anthony Pietrangelo, senior vice president and chief nuclear officer at the Nuclear Energy Institute.
