Always be on the lookout for good recommendations, even when you're not job hunting, Miriam Salpeter writes. To gather the strongest recommendations, ask for them soon after completing stellar work and don't rely on reciprocal kudos via LinkedIn. Before giving names to an employer, contact your references to remind them of your skills and to find out if "someone on your list isn't as enthusiastic as you would expect," she writes.
