Alaska's KNOM: Our listeners know they have a friend

KNOM, the AM-FM station in Nome, Alaska, says it is committed to serving its isolated audience, despite the challenges of severe weather, high cost of living and budgetary constraints. The station is being honored at April's NAB Show with a Crystal Heritage Award, which recognizes stations that have received five Crystal Radio Awards for community service. "We work overtime to make people feel they are cared for, and our listeners know there are friends on the other end of the radio," said Ric Schmidt, KNOM's general manager. "Of course, we don't see most of the people we serve, and they usually don't see us, but we are connected."
