New technology could allow roof at NYC tennis center

New composite-material technology known as a Sandwich Plate System could make it possible to add a roof over the Arthur Ashe Stadium at the Billie Jean King National Tennis Center in New York. The weight of the stadium's upper bowl has made a roof impossible, but the two metal plates and an elastomer core of the SPS would be lighter and could support the roof. Engineers from the United States Tennis Association are studying the option.
