Protein identified as cause of blood type linked to transfusion rejection

A molecule called Small Integral Membrane Protein 1 has been identified as the cause of the Vel-negative blood type, which can lead to the rejection of blood transfusions, according to a study in the journal EMBO Molecular Medicine. The researchers developed a DNA test that they say can be used in transfusion screening.
