Researchers use sonar to create accurate ocean-floor maps

Scientists are beginning an ocean-floor mapping project, using high-powered sonar to map the seabed between Chile and South Africa. Boat-mounted sonar offers a more accurate picture of the ocean floor than conventional satellite imaging, geophysicists say, but because of the technology's cost only about 7% of the seabed has been mapped so far using sonar.
