Hotel firms such as Pyramid Hotel Group, White Lodging and Hostmark Hospitality Group have emphasized sales skills as an important trait in new hires. A strong grasp of sales strategies are also proving to be useful qualities for a hotel general manager. "The best GMs in the industry ... are very engaged with their sales teams and with their customer bases. ... GMs who set the tone by taking care of the guest and engaging the guest at a very high level will perform well in the good times but will also sustain that success as the market cycles in the other direction," said Cory Chambers, a director at White Lodging.
