Why professional development is key for math educators

Math teachers should focus on exploring their subject matter in professional learning communities as one way to improve their instruction, writes middle-school math teacher and coach José Vilson. In this blog post, he also suggests that math educators work in teams to develop curriculum, and, for new educators, he recommends learning to create curriculum maps, pacing calendars and unit maps. Other suggestions include placing the focus on requiring evidence of student learning and allowing for multiple ways for students to arrive at the correct answer.
