IT firms see opportunity in coming smart-grid data boom

The smart grid promises to boost the efficiency of the nation's energy infrastructure and give consumers more insight into their power use, but it also will generate massive amounts of data, which means utilities will need to turn to the IT sector for help. Companies such as EMC and Teradata are among those hoping to capitalize on that trend by getting an early start: Both have recently partnered with smart-grid technology firms and tout their technology for managing and mining grid data.
