Senate committee advances school-nutrition bill

The Senate Agriculture Committee unanimously approved a bill that would add $4.5 billion over 10 years to child-nutrition programs and give the Department of Agriculture authority to formulate new standards for food served in schools. The legislation "puts us on the path to ending childhood hunger and addressing the epidemic of childhood obesity," said Sen. Blanche Lincoln, D-Ark., chairwoman of the committee.
