Technological advances, regulation boost feasibility of bioplastics:

Bio-based plastic alternatives are becoming more popular as production costs are reduced and lawmakers crack down on plastics use. Global sales of industrial biotechs may reach $100 billion by 2011, according to consultancy firm McKinsey. However, bioplastics are far from replacing oil-based polymers because of "low oil prices, high production cost and restricted production capacity of biomass-based polymers," said Patrick Navard of European Bioplastics.
