Draft food safety regs were weakened by OMB, documents show

Documents submitted to the Federal Register last week show that the Office of Management and Budget took out safeguards recommended by the FDA in the USDA's draft of rules under the Food Safety Modernization Act. Among the numerous changes made by the OMB is the omission of the requirement for environmental and product testing, which was requested by the FDA. The OMB changes also give farms an extra year for compliance with the new rules.
