Palliative guidelines call for certifications, care standards

Updated palliative care guidelines released at the American Academy of Hospice and Palliative Medicine's annual meeting call for certifications in major field disciplines and emphasize starting palliative services at diagnosis. The CMS is in the early stages of collecting data on hospice performance. Dr. Diane Meier, co-leader of the National Consensus Project for Quality Palliative Care, said clinicians can use the information to see what other hospitals are doing and make comparisons.
