U.S. durable goods, housing up as consumer confidence slides

An 8.1% January jump in housing prices and a 5.7% surge in durable-goods orders in February provided additional evidence of a mending U.S. economy Tuesday. But the Conference Board's index of consumer sentiment plunged to 59.7 from 68 in February as the so-called U.S. budget sequester took effect and more talk of a budget showdown emerged from Washington.
