Crews prep pit for borer of $3.1B Alaskan Way Viaduct replacement

Crews began drilling a six-story deep, 350-foot long pit in Seattle this week as the assembly site for a five-story-high tunnel-boring machine. The borer, being manufactured in Japan, will dig through 1.7 miles of gravel, silt and sand as part of the $3.1 billion project to replace the Alaskan Way Viaduct.
