Greenway executive comments on HIT, docs study

EHRs and other health IT can lessen care expenses per practice, but the systemwide costs can only be reduced when all of the delivery reform factors, including new structures for payment are integrated, says Justin Barnes, vice president of government affairs at Greenway Medical Technologies. In response to a study on the increased diagnostic follow-up tests requested by physicians who have electronic access to imaging results, Barnes said HIT alone will not lower health care costs, but it does play an important role in moving toward that goal.
