MIT student's device may eliminate 1 hazard of laparoscopic surgery

One of the biggest problems with laparoscopic surgery involves the access puncture, in which the surgeon may overshoot his target due to initial resistance suddenly giving way. Now a device developed by Nikolai Begg, a mechanical engineering student at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, stands to reduce that danger with a mechanism that automatically retracts the puncturing blade once resistance is overcome.
