Railroads plan record investment as industry booms

U.S. railroads are set to invest a record $14 billion this year to improve speed and efficiency as customers demand more capacity to haul freight. Rail is becoming the most important part of the commercial-transportation system and is a key factor in economic recovery. The cost of rail freight is half what it was 30 years ago.
