Satellite providers target rural DSL subscribers for fast broadband

Satellite companies ViaSat and Hughes Network Systems are set this year to bring faster download speeds and more reliable broadband service to rural areas with the launch of new satellites. Hughes has yet to set pricing for a service based on an upcoming satellite launch that will speed downloads up to fivefold. ViaSat upgraded from the WildBlue Internet to its new Exede brand earlier this year after a satellite launch in 2011. "Unserved customers (are) a sizable market," noted analyst Chris Baugh with the NSR research firm.
