Bookstore stays open after owner asks her customers for help

Read Between the Lynes, an independent bookstore in Woodstock, Ill., ran into financial difficulty in 2011 after being in business for six years. Instead of closing the store, owner Arlene Lynes wrote a letter to her customers that explained the dire situation and asked them to buy a gift card or spend a little more each month. "The people who received it started spreading the word on Facebook and other social media. Then it kind of took a life of its own," said Lynes, who was able to keep the store open.
