Lasers used to check blood oxygenation

Closely timed firing of two lasers determines the color of red blood cells and how well they're oxygenated in a new system developed by biomedical engineers at the University of Washington in St. Louis. The real-time system, dubbed photoacoustic flowoxigraphy, could be used for such things as monitoring changes in oxygen metabolism caused by diabetes or cancer or the effects of various therapies.
