Longboat Key condo complex designed to stand up to hurricanes

Sands Point on Florida's Longboat Key, which opened in 1966, was built to endure, with precast solid concrete floors and columns meant to stand up to hurricanes. Walls might be stripped away in a storm blast, but the essential structure would remain. The fortress-like complex on the southern tip of the key was designed by architects Carl Vollmer and Earl Draeger in a configuration suggesting a figure 8, with all units facing outward.
