U.S. jobless claims rise as consumer sentiment cools

U.S. claims for jobless benefits rose last week, and a Bloomberg index of consumer confidence for March edged down ahead of automatic cuts in government spending that may take a toll on the consumer-driven economy. The figures indicated "there will be some impact from the [budget] sequester, and certainly the second quarter should look somewhat softer than the first quarter," said Deutsche Bank Securities economist Carl Riccadonna.
