Wal-Mart's staff of about 1,500 engineers are almost like a startup that operates in Northern California, far from the retail giant's Bentonville, Ark., headquarters. The fast-growing tech group was tasked with charting the company's omnichannel retail future, starting with a new search engine launched last fall that has driven higher search-to-sale conversion rates, the company says.
