Obama uses executive orders to speed gun-control reforms

President Barack Obama is using his executive authority to beef up the nation's background check system for gun ownership, to spur new research into the causes of gun violence, and to launch a publicity campaign promoting safe gun ownership. Legislation will still be needed to implement more sweeping gun-safety reforms, but the executive orders are a useful stopgap measure, gun-control advocates say. "Ultimately you need to close the loopholes in the law that will continue to undermine enforcement, but what they’re doing is precisely right," said Mark Glaze, director of Michael Bloomberg’s Mayors Against Illegal Guns group.
