Salon treatments pose safety risk to patrons

Nail polish dryers that emit ultraviolet light may be to blame for the skin cancers two women developed on the backs of their hands, according to a University of Texas study published in the Archives of Dermatology. Dermatologists recommend using fan dryers instead or at least applying a good sunscreen before using UV dryers. In addition, strong chemical peels offered by salons and spas can cause permanent scarring and skin discoloration. "Medium or deep peels should only be performed by a dermatologist with experience in giving them," said Dr. Nia Terezakis, a dermatologist and clinical professor of dermatology.
