Taking a cue from ants' collective intelligence, tiny robots with minimal processing power can work together to solve challenging problems. The swarming robo-ants thus can quickly find the most efficient way through a labyrinth by filtering out noisy information and focusing, says Simon Garnier, a biologist at the New Jersey Institute of Technology’s Swarm Lab. The lesson to be drawn for us, says Guy Theraulaz, a behavioral biologist at the National Center for Scientific Research in France, is that "we are overloaded with information but we didn’t develop the appropriate filter. Now we produce a kind of collective madness, and that’s the problem."
