Apps, developers depend on Foursquare's API for location info

Foursquare's application programming interface is vitally important to the mobile Web and the overall applications ecosystem, Roamz founder Jonathan Barouch writes. Some 40,000 developers use the API as the location-information foundation of apps such as Foodspotting and Instagram, as well as being integral to the functioning of Twitter and Facebook to a lesser extent. "And while Google has an excellent Places database of its own, it too has an interest in ensuring Foursquare's longevity. Those same app developers that fill up Apple's App Store charts are also pumping out apps on Google Play that rely on Foursquare data," Barouch writes.
