Helmet alerts firefighters to objects when smoke blocks the view

Ultrasound sensors linked to vibrating pads in helmets can help firefighters maneuver through smoke-choked environments by detecting nearby objects. The so-called tactile helmet, developed by engineering faculty at the U.K.'s University of Sheffield, employs technology that could also aid the visually impaired in a lighter-weight version.
