Many people fail because they're squeamish about the fundamental principles of gaining influence, Stanford University professor Jeffrey Pfeffer says. They refuse to advocate for themselves, they refuse to deeply contemplate their boss' needs and they refuse to leverage relationships to get ahead. "There are rules of power; you need to understand them. You don't need to like them," he said.
