U.S. auto sales increase 24.3%, the biggest gain since summer

Led by Toyota Motor and Ford Motor, auto sales in the U.S. increased 24.3% last month compared with March 2009, the strongest performance since August, when the government's "Cash for Clunkers" fueled a brief sales spike. March sales at Toyota jumped 40.7%, while Ford posted a 39.9% gain. All of the major automakers except Chrysler reported a double-digit increase.
