Research links diabetes, folic acid intake to birth defects

The children of women with diabetes who did not take folic acid supplements near the time of conception were twice as likely to have heart and noncardiac birth defects compared with those whose mothers did take the supplements, according to a study in the American Journal of Obstetrics and Gynecology.
