Pet ownership comes with great financial responsibilities. There are ways to cut the costs, experts say, including adopting pets from shelters and rescue groups that charge nominal fees and usually pay for neutering or spaying, first vaccinations and microchipping. Preventive care including regular dental cleanings can also help owners avoid higher costs later on. "Beyond the need to thoroughly clean tartar under the gum line, a full oral exam is necessary to identify damage to teeth or locate growths or tumors," says AVMA spokesman Michael San Filippo.
