Expert offers tips for preventing pigmentation problems

Aggressive use of chemical peels, microdermabrasion and laser therapies can cause pigmentation problems in patients with dark skin, says dermatologist Marta Rendon, president of the Skin of Color Society. A thorough medical history should include questions about ethnic background, reactions to past treatment, postinflammatory hyperpigmentation, hobbies and sports, Rendon says. Resurfacing should be done cautiously, and dermatologists should be ready to treat pigmentation problems that arise, she said.
