Evolving tax laws spur new approaches to estate planning

Estate-planning strategies are shifting as a result of the new Medicare tax on passive investment income, higher marginal tax rates and other industry changes. Some investors might be able to reduce tax liability under the new laws, for example, by distributing income-producing assets in a trust to heirs in lower tax brackets.
