Studies support use of peer counselors, care management in diabetes

Peer health coaches and care management teams are two approaches that can help family physicians manage patients with diabetes, according to studies in the Annals of Family Medicine. Both strategies led to reductions in patient hemoglobin A1C levels. David Thom, M.D., author of one of the studies, said peer counselors who have diabetes show that patients can be part of the diabetes solution.
