Fashion retailer Mitchells has been family owned since Ed and Norma Mitchell opened the first Westport, Conn., store in 1958, but the company has grown significantly, largely through acquisitions, and today its success rests on a management team that includes many non-family members, says co-president Bob Mitchell. "All the family and non-family members have very clear job descriptions and accountability, with a real high level of communication we’ve taken to the nth-degree."
